Opal Security, a cybersecurity firm focusing on identity access management, secures $22 million in a Series B funding round led by Battery Ventures, with participation from Greylock and Box Group. The funding comes amid a reported decline in the cybersecurity market, reflected in a decrease in deals from Q2 to Q3. Opal plans to utilize the funds to scale its business, enhance customer service, and double its 30-person workforce by the end of 2024. The company aims to address scalability issues in access management faced by large enterprises.

Opal's suite offers businesses a centralized view and control of employee access, setting up approval procedures and automating access policies. Founder and CEO Umaimah Khan, a cryptography expert and former employee of MIT, aims to fill the gap in scalable identity access orchestration platforms. The company stands out with analytics and AI features focused on thwarting identity-based threats, attracting customers such as Figma, Scale AI, and Databricks.

Opal's recent capital round, increasing its war chest to $32 million, signifies the market's recognition of its value proposition. The company's yearly recurring revenue has grown four times since its Series A in June 2022, showcasing its appeal to businesses grappling with dispersed systems and data. Khan emphasizes Opal's ability to address the major pain points for technical decision-makers, offering scalable and usable tools for identity access management in complex enterprise environments.

Despite concerns about cybersecurity market decline, Khan is optimistic, citing Opal's advantages in the wake of new regulations and increased cyber threats. Opal's platform, providing a protection layer against cyber intrusions, is positioned to weather market headwinds and make substantial investments in staff and product development.
